This was a memorable weekend. I waded out of my comfort zone and ventured beyond my limitations.
Let’s start with comfort zone, as defined by Lifehacker. It’s considered a "behavioral space where your activities and behaviors fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk" -- the operative words here being stress and risk.
We all seek a sense of familiarity, security and certainty. It’s when we step outside our comfort zone that we're taking a risk and opening ourselves up. Sometimes that produces stress and anxiety. That’s what gets in the way.
Yesterday, I left my comfort zone unexpectedly...
A friend who was visiting from Vermont loves to swim in the ocean. Our recent winter weather didn’t phase him a bit. The aqua blue waves and crystal clear water was all he wanted. Temperature wasn’t an issue, at all.
I decided to sit in a lounge chair and watch him do his thing but something called me to walk up to the ocean's edge. I put my feet in the water and it was COLD! But I stayed for a minute or two and acclimated. “Not too bad,” I thought…. and then with a momentous force — I dove in!
The freedom and invigoration and the excitement of it all lasted for almost 10 minutes and it was really liberating. I’ve been telling myself for a long time I like to swim in 87 degree water. Turns out the ocean was 74 and I loved it. Brrrrrr and Great!
I learned that unbridled joy was just outside my comfort zone. How about you? Is there something that you are ready to dive in to?
